Tool Room Manager, Machine Operations

Accountabilities

The Tool Room Manager, who works under the direction of the Engineering Manager, or designee, oversees & directs personnel related to the operations of maintenance and repair of plastic injection molding tools and projects associated with assembly and packaging equipment. Knowledge of plastic injection molding tools, machinery, manufacturing methods and quality systems are necessary.  Directing trouble-shooting activities is highly desired along with an appreciation for teamwork.

  • Supervise machinist work, mold repair, and production equipment repairs
  • Provide technical training and developmental needs of team, administers yearly performance appraisals, empower personnel to work toward department goals and objectives

  • Provide prototype assistance and trouble shooting, oversee project design, installation and modifications
  • Responsible for planning, scheduling and managing machining, mold repair and PM production equipment repairs, tooling costs, outside vendor projects and tool room assigned drafting projects
  • Reduce unnecessary production interruptions and continually improved performance of both machinery and personnel
  • Coordinate tool and required machine maintenance with production, logistics and engineering personnel
  • Promote and coordinate OpEx programs and projects
  • Follow all ISO 9002, ISO 13485 standards, GMP, OSHA and plant/corporate policies and procedures
  • Observe all safety precautions and regulations at all times in all areas where duties are performed
  • Report all safety hazards and potential unsafe working conditions

What Machine Operation contributes to Cardinal Health

Sets up and operates a variety of machine tools to make metal parts, mechanisms, tools, or machines to exacting tolerances and dimensions. Interprets blueprints, sketches, and engineering specifications

  • Determines sequence of operations, number of cuts required, and method of setup
  • Uses a variety of machinist's hand tools and precision measuring instruments
  • Makes standard shop computations relating to dimensions of work, tooling, feeds, and speeds
  • Measures, marks, and scribes dimensions and reference points to lay out stock for machining
  • Fits and assembles precision parts into mechanical equipment and determines material, parts, and equipment required. Some machines may be numerically controlled. May monitor and verify quality in accordance with statistical process or other control procedures. Typically requires completion of a formal apprenticeship or equivalent training and experience.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

  • Bachelors degree or equivalent experience in related field preferred
  • A minimum of 4+ years related work experience required and 1+ year supervisory experience preferred
  • Understanding of FDA regulations surrounding the manufacturing of medical devices, GMPs and process validations preferred
  • Experience with Six Sigma and Lean Manufacturing tools preferred
  • Demonstrated success in managing people and leading multiples teams and/or departments
  • Demonstrated success in achieving results along with strong financial acumen and project management
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret drawings preferred
  • Ability to motivate, coach and develop others
  • Strong communication skills and interpersonal skills
  • The ability to plan, organize, and prioritize to meet deadlines
