VP, Managed Care and Business Development

This position is responsible for the development and management of business relationships with Pharmacy Benefit Management (PBM) companies and Health Plans. Responsibilities include contracting activities, network and performance participation for Cardinal Health and its Pharmacy Services Administrative Organizations (PSAOs). This involves identifying and evaluating strategic opportunities for all lines of business including Medicare, Medicaid, and various commercial markets.

The Vice President, Managed Care and Business Development is an executive position responsible for comprehensive strategic and operational pharmacy and managed care services for Cardinal Health’s PSAO’s. This leadership role is expected to lead the transformation of managed care and pharmacy services across segments including retail independent pharmacies, retail chains and franchisees in an effort to drive the overall success of the business. This includes contract negotiations and pharmacy performance and outcomes for over 5700 pharmacies in our PSAO. The business development nature of this role includes supporting the sales organization to drive growth and overall success of the business.

Position Accountabilities

  • In-depth functional and business expertise coupled with a minimum of 10 years at a leadership level
  • Prior experience in insurance, healthcare benefits and/or healthcare systems
  • Provide leadership and direction for multiple functional areas through direct reports
  • Manage and deploy resources, leveraging knowledge of competitive advantage and profit drivers
  • Apply business expertise to develop financial and operational objectives

Position Qualifications

  • Demonstrate knowledge of network and payor concepts necessary for building a business and marketing plan, as well as identifying appropriate channels to market; ability to understand managed care trends, competitive positioning, and can establish or adjust service offerings (pricing etc .)
  • Exhibit strong financial acumen and logical decision making skills in the general business environment
  • Understand and demonstrate sound thought processes as they relate to pricing, deal structure, financial modeling, and assessing gross margin/profitability
  • Validate managed care contracts through review and negotiation, effectively developing and maintaining high level relationships with PBMs, the Network, and other managed care vendors
  • Exhibit an ability to translate market and customer needs into clearly defined goals, objectives, strategies, and tactics to drive sales and profitability for the business; accountable for gaining and driving cross functional support from all stakeholders
  • Identify and remain current on payer market and reimbursement trends; determine product/service lifecycle implications and makes recommendations to maintain market competitiveness to achieve sustainable economic success
  • Understand methods available to execute primary research necessary to drive business decisions.
  • Ability to identify market opportunities through analysis of network performance and compliance, taking action to implement and manage solutions that meet customer needs
  • Understand the regulatory environment surrounding payer relations, reimbursement and health policy
  • Work effectively across cross functional groups including but not limited to IT, communications, operations, sales and finance
